It’s the most wonderful time of the year
Oh the weather outside is frightful
You know, I have had a long break from this and I am (kinda) walking in with shame. Women like me usually don’t disappear for so long. I am ashamed. Divas. Anyway, I am in my home town in the Eastern Cape and I am ready to serve. I’m ready to werq.
So, as you probably know, I was fortunate to be apart of this incredible round table with CECZA (check it out here) but, I wanted to expand on that with a thought experiment. I am here to give you my 23 of my favourite collections of 2023 I will not be doing any research and preparing a list. I am doing this freehand baby and let’s see what I come up with.
So I made a list (I’m checking it twice) and I started to look at my previous reviews and I’ve added quotes where I can.
Martine Rose SS24
This collection feels rooted in the common man in an uncommon fashion. Its outlook is genderless and revolutionary because it’s a reimagining of these world and everyday garments. It’s not swapped, it’s melding and it’s perfect for the conversation today.
Miu Miu AW23
There is less room for circus and frivolity. That would be counterintuitive because I just told you that ITS NOT THAT SERIOUS but I lied
Alexander McQueen AW23 AND SS24 Womenswear
The clothes. Beautiful, Masterful, Perverse. I MEAN, from the bright red akin to blood to the deconstructed cable knit that kinda made me think of intestines (sorry, its contextual) I absolutely loved how surgical and precise or loose (stream let loose by Loosey Laduca) and decaying everything was.
Kiko Kostadinov SS24 Menswear
It is a feast of construction and the clothing is the star in a complex play between our daily wear and the imperfect perfections of the normal.
Sacai AW23 Menswear
Dries van Noten SS24 Womenswear
Does this man know how to miss? Looking to familiarity, structure, and formality to create spontaneous clothing that is ALIVE.
Fendi SS24 Menswear
I want everyone to know that Fendi is grossly ignored in conversations of Menswear giants. It pushes the needle forward in the shadows and I sincerely hope all of you are paying attention.
Undercover SS24 Womenswear
The greatest episode of a night in the museum on the runway. It’s incredibly intimate whilst being ever so encompassing. Like the terrarium, you see the whole world of the clothing and its genius to me. That finale, no notes.
Marc Jacobs AW23
Schiaparelli AW23 Ready to wear
Ferragamo AW23
Molly Goddard SS24
It’s the simple idea of turning everything inside out in a way that hit the romantic heart of the brand. Just masterful and even artful.
Thom Browne AW23 Couture
The world building of Thom Browne is incredible and almost so instantaneously recognisable. It was absolutely delightful to witness the first of what I hope are many couture shows
Viktor and Rolf AW23 Couture
Marni AW23
Bottega Veneta SS24
Balmain Pre-Fall 2023
Proenza Schouler AW23
Paolo Carzana AW23
Loewe SS24 Menswear
This season we got wearable whacky. You can see the absurdity of JW Anderson but in a more commercial sense.
Tory Burch SS24
This collection feels like the 60s but modernised. It takes ideas and ages them up. It doesn’t transform them. They feel lived in.
Christopher John Rogers Pre-Fall 24
Junya Watanabe SS24 Menswear
To Quote myself “the geometric deconstructed magic is a privilege for us mortals to witness” Look at the materials.
Who do you think should be on this list that didn’t make it.
Any way. We’ll be on a break till the 15th of Jan where we can start looking at Menswear again!
Have a great day and remember that “this is the moment.”
Loves it,
